My most favourite animal ever, their babies look like tiny coconuts with ginger hair - I could actually die from cuteness agression!
So Orangutans used to live more solitary than they do now. They are inherently semi-solitary, but due to forestation and the establishments of plantations - specifically oil palms - they are forced to live more closely in ever getting smaller habitats.
Not only do they have to lose their homes -> Orangutans often loose their families to forest fires, starvation, and direct killings.
Orphaned Orangutan-babies have the lowest survival chance in these cases, which is why there are groups of brave and hard working activists that take them in. They put them in these so called orphanages, where young orangutans are looked after medically AND socially. These ginger coconuts are put into little groups just like in kindergarden, where they learn to socialize and look after each other and themselves. They are tought how to survive in the wild and once graduated are also released into safe forests
